Decade of Domination

Due West, S.C. – For ten years now, the Erskine Flying Fleet (18-5) have won the Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Championship Tournament Title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Southeast Women's Tennis Regional Tournament. 
 
The Flying Fleet topped the Falcons of Pfeiffer University (19-2) 5 to 3 today to secure their tenth consecutive title at the Palmetto Tennis Center.  Both Pfeiffer's losses this season have come at the hands of the Fleet.
 
Erskine snagged an early 2-1 advantage following the doubles matches.  Sophomore Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) and freshman Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) tallied the Fleet's first point with an 8-5 victory at #3 doubles.  Senior Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) and junior Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) held on to win 8-6 at #1 doubles while sophomores Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and Sarah McDonald (Cottageville, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy)were edged 8-6 at #2 doubles.
 
In the six singles matches, Erskine won three of the five completed matches to secure the title.  After a challenging first set, both Hallman and Polk prevailed in straight sets to put the Fleet up 4 to 1. 
 
Pfeiffer's Hannah Watson and Mylene Petitpas won the next two points to put within a point.  Watson clipped McDonald in straight sets while Petitpas won in three sets over Elliott.
 
Goyette rallied from a set down to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to send the Flying Fleet back to the regional tournament.
 
For Pfeiffer, it was their first-ever appearance in the title match.
 
Erskine had three players named to the All-Tournament Team.  Hallman took home Most Valuable Player honors while Goyette and Polk were voted to the team for their outstanding play.
