Box Score 2 Burlington, NC - The Flying Fleet lost a winner's bracket game 10-6 to King University Saturday afternoon and then fell 5-2 to Barton, eliminating Erskine from the Conference Carolinas tournament.
Erskine vs. KingErskine jumped out to a 6-4 edge after three innings but senior Ryan Nichols took over the mound for King in the top of the fourth and tossed six scoreless frames to allow the Tornado to pull their second straight upset.
The two teams start the afternoon playing a 37 minute first inning that saw both squads score four runs. Erskine took the initial lead with the top of the first being highlighted by a junior
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) home run and a two-run single by sophomore
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS). Oversteet's ninth homer was a two-run shot to right-center.
King leveled the score at 4-4 in the home half of the first. Junior Tyler Raymond started the Tornado scoring with a two-run single to center before seniors J.D. Wallace and Hunter Smith followed with consecutive run-producing singles.
Erskine regained the lead, 6-4, with one run in both the second and third. Senior
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS)'s infield single put the Fleet ahead and junior
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) doubled up the advantage with a sacrifice fly.
The Tornado's second comeback was started in the fourth on an RBI groundball by senior Tyler Gaby, who also scored twice from the leadoff position.
King outhit Erskine, 13-10, with Cieslewitz (four hits) and Raymond (three) accounting four over half of the hits.
Corn and junior
Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) were the only two Flying Fleet batters with two base knocks. Junior reliever
Zach McAllister (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) (5-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs over five innings.
Erskine vs. BartonErskine rallied to tie the contest at 2-2 on a two run home run by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) in the sixth inning before Andrew Webster lasered his decisive two-run homer to left. Freshman Calvin Hawke led off the eighth with a single up the middle.
Senior Dillon Rudio tacked on an insurance run in the ninth with a double in the right field gap that plated freshman Tyler Garrett, who scored from first after drawing a two-out walk.
Junior Zach Breen tossed retired the Fleet in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save in a Royal Blue and White uniform. Classmate Mike Brienza (3-3), who was pitching for a third consecutive day, hurled a scoreless seventh inning and was credited with the win.
Senior left fielder Phillip Cotten was the key component in Barton building a 2-0 lead after five innings. Cotten drilled a home run to lead off the third inning and then doubled to start the fifth and then scored on a squeeze bunt by Garrett.
Garrett was 2 for 2 with a walk, sac bunt, and a stolen base.
Barton doubled up Erskine on hits, 10-5, with Cotten and Garrett pacing eight different Bulldogs with hits with two apiece.
Three of the Flying Fleet's five base knocks were extra-base hits but EC was unable to take advance of a two-out triple by senior Chase Corn in the first and a one-out double by senior
Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) in the eighth.
Barton scored its final three runs on junior Wes Schuler (5-2), who was named the league's First Team All-Conference reliever.
