Fitch fires shutout; Erskine marches on in tournament

Box Score Burlington, N.C. – Erskine's Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) fired a four hit shutout to lead the Flying Fleet past the Falcons of Pfeiffer University 2 to 0 this afternoon in the Conference Carolinas Softball Championship Tournament held at Springwood Park.

The two pitchers were locked in a pitching duel through the first four innings.  In the fifth, Erskine pushed the game's two runs across the plate.  After junior Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Manning High School) singled up the middle with one out, Fitch was beaned by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Junior Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) then loaded the bases with a ground ball up the middle.  A wild pitch by Pfeiffer hurler Sam Jarmusch allowed both Windham and Fitch to score.

Pfeiffer's best opportunity to score on Fitch came in the seventh inning after Lindsey Russell singled to lead-off the inning.  Fitch induced back-to-back ground balls and got Jaclyn Boever to pop up to preserve the shutout and give the Fleet the 2 to 0 win.

Two of the Falcons' four hits were by Lindsey Russell.

Erskine's Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) had two hits to lead the Flying Fleet while Windham finished with a hit and two walks.

With the loss, Pfeiffer is eliminated from the conference tournament.  Erskine immediately turns around to play #1 seed Limestone College at 4:00 p.m. today.
