Erskine downs Barton 4-2; stays alive in tournament

Box Score Burlington, N.C. – After suffering through a six-hour rain delay, the Erskine Flying Fleet stayed alive in the conference tournament by downing the Bulldogs of Barton College 4 to 2 at Springwood Park.

After falling behind early 1-0, Erskine tied the game in the third inning off two errant Barton throws.  After sophomore Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) walked to start the inning, Barton threw away a sacrifice bunt attempt by Kaitlyn Kerley (North Charleston, SC, Fort Dorchester High School) to put runners on second and third for the Fleet.  Barton pitcher Ashlyn Reagan struck out the next two batters and should have been out of the inning with no damage done but another throwing miscue allowed Long to score from third.  Barton finally got out of the inning with the score tied 1-1.

In the next inning, Erskine tallied three more runs to seal the victory.  Erskine again capitalized on a lead-off walk.  Freshman Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) walked and after stealing second, scored on Ashlyn Hick's base hit.  Long followed with a two-run blast to left for her fourth home run of the year.

In the circle, Erskine's Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) scattered eleven hits, all singles, over six and third innings to pick up the win.  In the first inning, Barton touched White for one run on two hits and a walk.  After that White settled down, allowing just four singles over the next five frames.  In the seventh, Barton opened the inning with two hits.  After a popup, Barton tallied their second run on an rbi single by Betsy Braswell.  Senior Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) came on in relief of White to get the final two outs for her fourth save of the year.

With the win, #5 Erskine (18-22) advances to play the loser between #2 King University and #6 Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.  Live stats will be provided for the game.
