Box Score 2 Greenwood, S.C. – Erskine got two outstanding pitching performances in sweeping local rival Lander University 1-0 and 3-2 in non-conference softball action at Doug Spears Field.
Erskine's
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) shutout local rival Lander University in the first game and senior
Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) tossed four shutout innings in relief to win game two 3-2. Both runs the Fleet pitching staff surrendered were unearned.
Newton limited the Bearcats to just five hits over seven innings. She struck out five and walked two in earning her fifth win of the season.
The Fleet scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. Freshman
Taylor Fernandes (Lincolnton, GA, Lincoln County High School) doubled with one out and fellow freshman
Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) singled her home as the Fleet won 1-0.
Erskine banged out seven hits in the first game.
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) and
Kaitlyn Kerley (North Charleston, SC, Fort Dorchester High School) had two hits apiece to lead the Fleet offensively.
In the next game, Erskine scored all three runs in the fourth inning. After
Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Manning High School) singled,
Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) hammered a double down the left field line to score Windham.
Taylor Hedger (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) singled to put runners on the corners and with two outs,
Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) delivered an rbi single to cap the Fleet three-run inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Mulzer entered the game after starter
Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) yielded back-to-back singles to open the inning. After striking out her first batter, Mulzer induced a ground ball that was misplayed, leading to two unearned runs in the inning. Mulzer surrendered just three hits over four innings in earning her first win of the season.
McCarson went 3 for 4 finishing just a home run shy of the cycle.
Erskine hosts archrival Anderson University for two games this Thursday starting at 3:00 p.m.
