Erskine ends regular season with two losses to Limestone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying (17-21, 8-8) ended their regular season with two losses 6-1 and 12-3 to conference-leading Limestone College Saints (28-16, 12-4) this afternoon in Conference Carolinas softball action at Saints Field.

Game One

With the game tied 1-1, Limestone erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 6 to 1.

Erskine clung to a 1-0 until the fourth when Limestone tied the game 1-1.  In the first, Erskine grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) singled home Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) off Kelly Shearer.  Shearer would not surrender another hit the rest of the game.  Limestone tied the game in the fourth on an rbi double by Leea Polin.

Limestone blew the game open the sixth, tagging Erskine pitcher Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) for five runs.  Alycia Stiles hit a two-run home run and Sam Thornton cleared the bases with 3-run triple with two outs.

Newton took the loss while Shearer picked up her 14th win of the season.

Game Two

Limestone invoked the mercy rule on the Flying Fleet scoring eleven runs in two innings to win the nightcap 12-3.

Erskine led 3-1 after two innings.  After Limestone scored a run in the first, Erskine pushed three runs across the plate in the second.  With two runners on, Erskine capitalized on a Saint fielding miscue to score three runs.  Hicks, Kaitlyn Kerley (North Charleston, SC, Fort Dorchester High School) and Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School) all singled in the inning to knock Shearer out of the game.

In the fourth inning, Limestone's first six batters reached base as they took a 6 to 3 lead.  In the next inning, Limestone scored six runs with two outs.  Stiles went deep again, this time clearing the bases with a grand slam, to invoke the 8-run mercy rule on the Flying Fleet.

This weekend's final games will determine Erskine's seeding in the upcoming conference tournament.  Erskine will enter the tournament as either the #4 or #5 seed.
