Box Score Brevard, NC – The Flying Fleet scored four runs in their final two at bats to break a 5-5 tie and held on for a 9-5 victory Wednesday afternoon in baseball action.
Erskine (29-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) would walk to lead off the game and advance to second on a wild pitch.
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would single through the left side of the infield to move Kozak to third. Kozak would then score when Overstreet was thrown out trying to steal second. Brevard (17-28) would respond with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two run home run from Matthew Proffitt and a solo shot by Eric Renegar. In the top of the second,
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would draw a one out walk and
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) would reach base when the Tornados outfielder dropped a fly ball. With runners at second and third,
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would ground out to score Dix.
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would then single to center field, scoring Wilson and tying the game at three. Lollis would steal second and advance to third on a single by Kozak. Lollis would then score when Brevard tried to throw Kozak out at second and giver Erskine the lead.
The Fleet would add another run in the sixth to increase their lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Brevard would score two runs to tie the game at five, but it wouldn't last long.
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would lead off the top of the eighth with a single to the short stop and pinch hitter
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would then double to centerfield to put runners at second and third. Maivelett would then single up the middle to score both runners and give the Fleet the lead back. In the ninth, Overstreet and
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would hit back to back singles to lead off the inning. Smith would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position. Pinch hitter
Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) would then single to right field to score Overstreet. Corn would later score on a throwing error by the Tornado catcher to make it a 9-5 game.
Overstreet and Galliher each had two hits to lead the Erskine offense, while Maivelett drove in three runs.
Zach McAllister (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) (4-2) picked up the win allowing three hits and striking out three in three shutout innings of relief.
The Fleet return to action this weekend as they host Limestone in their final regular season conference series. The two teams will play a double header on Friday starting at 1:00.
