Erskine pulls out the brooms to sweep Pfeiffer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – Erskine's Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) hit two home runs, including a two-run walk-off home run to win game one, in the Erskine Flying Fleet's sweep of Pfeiffer University this afternoon in Conference Carolinas softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex.  Erskine (17-17, 8-4) won the first game 3 to 1 and took game two 8 to 2.

Game One

McCarson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh giving freshman pitcher Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) her eighth victory of the season. Newton struck out ten while giving up just one run on nine hits in the complete game victory.

Erskine stole a run in the third inning.  After McCarson walked and stole one of her four bases in the game, Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) reached on an error allowing McCarson to advance to third.  On the ensuing pitch, Hicks started for second to force a run-down.  McCarson sprinted home from third before Hicks was tagged out putting Erskine up 1-0.

Pfeiffer finally got to Newton in the sixth, stringing together three hits to push their lone run across the plate.

With one out, McCarson drilled a shot down the left field line that struck the foul pole to send the Fleet to the 3-1 victory.

Erskine's five hits in the game were by two players.  Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) went a perfect 3 for 3 with a double while McCarson had the other two hits.

Game Two

After being limited to five hits in the first game, Erskine erupted for ten hits in game two scoring eight runs.

McCarson hit her second home run of the day, a solo shot to dead center field while three other Fleet players each collected two hits apiece.   Freshman Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) went 2 for 2 driving in two while Taylor Fernandes (Lincolnton, GA, Lincoln County High School) had two hits, including a double, driving in a run as well.

Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) pitched six shutout innings in earning her fourth victory of the year.  Fitch surrendered just two hits.  She fanned three and did not issue a walk.

Erskine hosts in-state conference foe North Greenville University this Saturday for two games.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
