Hicks' single in the 9th sends Erskine to a sweep of LMC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – Erskine's Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) singled home Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School) in the bottom of ninth to give the Erskine Flying Fleet (15-17, 6-4) a sweep of the Lees-McRae Bobcats (8-31, 3-7) 5 to 1 and 7 to 6 (9 innings).

Game One

Erskine pitcher Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) struck out 10 batters in earning her seventh win of the season.  Newton limited Lees-McRae to one run on five hits.  The Bobcats scored their lone run in the third inning when Valerie Hickey smacked a two-out double and scored on teammate Sadie Lagle's base hit.  The only other time the Bobcats threatened to score was in the fifth when centerfielder Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) gunned down Lori Fulmer attempting to score on Hickey's fly ball.

Offensively, Erskine scored five runs in the first three innings.  Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) knocked in two runs, one on a rbi double in the first and another on a suicide squeeze in the third, much to the excitement of the local fans.  Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) had two hits in her return to the lineup from injury and Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Manning High School) went 1 for 3 with an rbi double.

Game Two

Erskine required two extra innings to defeat Lees-McRae 7 to 6 in game two.  After falling behind early 5 to 2, Erskine scored four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Trexler.  On the day, Trexler went 3 for 6 with a home run and four rbis.  The Bobcats tied the game at 6-6 in their next at-bat setting up Hicks' heroics in the ninth.  Hicks led the Fleet at the plate, going 2 for 5.

Fitch picked up the win in relief.  Fitch tossed three shutout innings, yielding just two hits while fanning three and issuing one walk.

Erskine hosts Pfeiffer University this Saturday for two games.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
