Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Erskine's upset bid of #8 Saint Leo University came up one set short as the Flying Fleet (10-4) fell to the Lions 5 to 4 in non-conference women's tennis action.
Erskine emerged from the doubles competition leading 2 to 1. Sophomores
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and
Sarah McDonald (Cottageville, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) won their #2 doubles match 8 to 5 while
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) and
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) had their 8-match win streak snapped, losing by the same score of 8 to 5 at #1 doubles. Erskine won the third match by default as St. Leo was unable to play due to a recent injury.
Gaining another point at #6 singles by default, the Flying Fleet needed to win two of the five remaining singles matches. Hallman won her match in straight sets but St. Leo tried the match at 4 to 4 with wins at #2, #3 and #5 singles. At #4 singles, McDonald rebounded to win the second set and force the third set tie-breaker. In another well-played close set, McDonald lost 6 to 4 to give the Lions the victory.
Erskine had won their previous five matches enter today's match.
Erskine will take a short rest to enjoy the remainder of their spring break. Erskine travels to Augusta, Georgia, next Thursday to play Georgia Regents University.
