Box Score 2 Due West, SC – The 21
st ranked Flying Fleet completed a three game sweep of Barton College Saturday afternoon, winning game one 7-2 and game two 11-0.
Game One
Neither team would get any offense going through the first two innings, but Barton (7-18, 2-4) would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Phillip Cotton would single to lead off the inning and then later score on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs the lead. In the bottom of the fourth,
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would lead off with a double, steal third, and then score on a ground out by
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) to tie the game up. The Bulldogs would answer in the top of the fifth, when Calvin Hake singled and scored on a single by Dillon Rudio to make it a 2-1 game.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the sixth,
Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) would single to lead off the inning, and then a walk to
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) and a single by Smith would load the bases. A flair single by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would score Kozak and tie the game. Corn would then score on a passed ball to give Erskine (18-3, 3-0) their first lead of the game. Pinch hitter
Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) would then draw a walk to load the bases once again and Smith would score on a sacrifice fly by
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC). Pinch hitter
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would finish the scoring for Erskine blasting a two run home run over the right center field fence.
Cothran was the lone Erskine hitter with two hits, while Galliher and Smith each had one hit and one RBI. In just his second start,
Nic Levy (Hilton Head, SC, Hilton Head HS) (1-0) picked up the win, throwing a complete game allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out two.
Rudio was 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Bulldog offense, while Mitchell Wheeler, Cotten, and Hawke added one hit each. Kyle Rufer (2-2) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
Game Two
The Fleet offense came alive from the start in game two; Kozak led off with a single and then stole second. He would advance to third on a single by Cothran. Corn would line a double to left center field to score Kozak. A sacrifice fly by Smith would score Cothran and make it a 2-0 game. In the bottom of the second,
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) would hit a one out single and score on a double by
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS). Lollis would then score when Kozak reached on a Barton error. Erskine would blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. Wilson would again single and advanced to third on a double by
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS). Kozak would then hit a two out single to score both runners and scored and a single from Cothran. Corn would then follow with a line drive over the right field fence to make it a 9-0 game. Erskine would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the win.
Corn led the Fleet at the plate going 3-4 with four RBI's, while Kozak was 3-5 with two runs batted in and three runs scored.
Wilson also added two hits and scored two runs, while Lollis added two hits and an RBI.
JR Black (Greenville, SC, USC Sumter) (4-0) picked up the win, scattering eight hits over 5.1 shutout innings and striking out three.
Wheeler led the Bulldogs offense going 3-4, while Andrew Webster and Chris Davis added two hits each. Duncan Everett (1-4) took the loss allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits in four innings of work.
