Erskine Blasts Five Home Runs to Complete Sweep of Belmont Abbey

Box Score Belmont, NC – The Flying Fleet scored four runs in the final two innings to break open a one run game and take a 9-4 victory over Belmont Abbey to complete a series sweep of the Crusaders Monday afternoon.

Erskine (15-2, 3-0) took the lead in the top of the second, when Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) led off with a walk and then scored when Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) blasted a home run to left center.  In the third, Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would double to right field and then steal third and score on a sacrifice fly by Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) to increase the Fleet lead to three.  Belmont Abbey (8-15, 1-5) would get on the board in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run by Anthony Dimino.  Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would put the Fleet back up by three with a two out solo home run in the fourth.  The Crusaders would once again answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-3.

Each team would score a run in the fifth inning to bring the score to 5-4 and it would stay there until the top of the eighth.  Smith would lead off the inning with a solo home run to give Erskine a little bit of breathing room.  In the top of the ninth, Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) would hit a one out solo home run to give the Fleet a three run lead.  After Corn reached base on a fielder's choice, Smith would hit his second home run in as many innings to finish the scoring for the Fleet.

Smith led the Fleet going 2-4 with two home runs and four RBI's, while Kozak was 3-4 with a home run and two runs scored.  Wes Schuler (Spartanburg, SC, USC Sumter) (1-0) entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and the tying runs on base.  He retired the first batter he faced, and then pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win.

Erskine returns to action tomorrow as they will travel to Augusta, GA to play Georgia Regents University at 2:00.
