Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – After dropping two games on their season opener, the Erskine Flying Fleet (2-2) returned the favor to Chowan University winning both games this afternoon 6-2 and 6-4 in non-conference softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex. It was the home opener for the Flying Fleet.
Game One
Erskine won the first game 6 to 2 behind three home runs and an impressive pitching performance by freshman
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School). Newton struck out a career-high 13 batters to earn her first collegiate win. She allowed just two runs on five hits over seven innings.
In the fifth inning, Erskine broke a 1-1 tie with four runs on back-to-back home runs. Freshman
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) provided the big blow, a three-run home run to left. Teammate
Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Manning High School) immediately followed with an impressive deep blast over the center field fence. For Trexler, it was her second home run while it was Windham's first of the season.
In the sixth inning, freshman
Taylor Fernandes (Lincolnton, GA, Lincoln County High School) added her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left that caromed off the top of the wall.
Game Two
Erskine won the second game 6 to 4 with a little assistance from Chowan University. The Fleet scored two runs each in the first, third, and fourth innings. In first and third innings, Chowan committed fielding miscues resulting to two unearned runs. In the fourth inning, junior
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) crushed a double to left-center to score both Fernandes, who lead off the inning with a double, and
Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School), who reached on a walk.
In the third inning, Chowan rallied for three runs with two outs. Chowan strung together four consecutive hits against Erskine starter
Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) to score the three runs.
Chowan threatened again in the fifth inning but senior
Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School), who came on in relief with bases loaded, induced a shallow fly to right and ground ball to end the inning.
Mulzer earned her first save by pitching two and two-thirds of shutout ball to preserve the win for White. For White, it was her first win of the year.
Erskine hosts local in-state rival Newberry College next Tuesday. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
