Erskine Defeats Anderson 6-0 in Season Opener

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet offense erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a 1-0 game and went on to a 6-0 victory over Anderson University Tuesday afternoon to open up the 2014 season.

In the bottom of the third inning, Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would lead off with a double and later score on a double by Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) to give Erskine (1-0) a 1-0 lead.  Erskine would then blow the game open with a five run fifth.  Spence would lead off with a walk and then scored on an Anderson (0-4) error.  Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) would add a two run single and Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would hit a two run double to round out the scoring.  Erskine starter Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College)) (1-0) shut the Trojan offense down allowing just one hit on seven runs and striking out seven over seven innings to pick up the win. 

Kozak led the Erskine offense going 3-5 with two doubles and a RBI, while Logan Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS), Smith, and Huff each added two hits in the win. 

Ryan Mills picked up the lone hit for Anderson, while David Thompson (0-2) picked up the loss allowing one earned run on six hits in 4.2 innings of work.

The Fleet will return to action Thursday and Friday as they travel to Alabama to play a three game series against Stillman.
