Erskine's upset bid of GWU falls short

Due West, S.C. – NCAA Division I foe Gardner-Webb University (2-0) escaped Due West with a 5 to 4 win over the Erskine Flying Fleet (1-1) this afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.

Erskine's upset bid came down to the final singles match.  After winning two of the three doubles matches, Erskine needed to split the singles matches to win the game.  Senior Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) won her match at the #1 seed in straight sets and freshman Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to win the next two sets for the Fleet's fourth point at #6 singles.

GWU won in straight sets at #3, #4, and #5 singles to tie the match at four all.  Sophomore Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) rebounded to claim the second set of her match after dropping the first but lost the third and decisive set 6-3, giving GWU the 5 to 4 victory.

Erskine hosts local rival Newberry College this Thursday at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.  Match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
