Erskine swept by Newberry 9-3, 4-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet was swept by the Newberry College Wolves 9 to 4 and 4 to 3 in non-conference softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex.

Game One

A couple of defensive miscues and a lack of timely hitting haunted the Flying Fleet in their game one loss.  Trailing by one, Erskine committed two errors and allowed two passed balls that resulted in four unearned runs over two innings.

While both teams each had seven hits each, Erskine was just two for ten, both singles, with runners in scoring position.  Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) and Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Manning High School) both delivered rbi singles, resulting in the three runs for the Fleet.

Freshman pitcher Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) took the loss, going the distance while allowing 9 runs, 5 earned, on 7 hits.

Casey Nellums led the Wolves, going 3 for 4 with a run scored.  Both Gabby Bedard and Darrian Jamison drove in two runs apiece while lead-off batter Ashlan Ayers got on base three times, scoring each time.

Game Two

Erskine pounded out seven more hits in game two, including a two run home run by Christine Long, but fell short losing 4 to 3.  Long hit her two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to trim the Wolves lead to one. Long finished 2 for 2 with the 2 runs batted in.

Sophomore Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) pitched well in the loss, allowing four runs on eleven hits.  She struck out six while issuing just one walk.

Newberry's Hannah Blakely picked up the win in relief, going four innings while yielding two runs on three hits.

Erskine will seek to snap their five-game losing streak against conference foe Belmont Abbey this Wednesday.  The first game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
