Erskine bats silent in sweep by Carson-Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine bats were silent today as the Carson-Newman Eagles (11-1) swept the Flying Fleet 9-1 and 2-0 this afternoon at the Erskine College Softball Complex.

Carson-Newman's Kalyn Davis tossed a perfect game in the nightcap and fellow pitcher Sarah Howard limited Erskine to just one run on five hits in the first game.

Game One

Erskine (3-5) committed four errors and misplayed two fly balls into hits that resulted in six runs for the Eagles.

After a solo blast by Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School), her first of the season, Erskine immediately surrendered five runs.  Carson-Newman led off the fourth inning with a solo home run by Caitlin Lance, her first, then scored four more runs on two Fleet miscues and a misjudged fly ball.

The Eagles added four more runs, only two earned, in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.

Twice Erskine loaded the bases early but failed to produce a hit to push a run across the plate.  In the second inning, Erskine almost staged a two-out rally.  Taylor Fernandes (Lincolnton, GA, Lincoln County High School) was hit by a pitch and Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) and Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) followed with a base hit and a walk respectively to load the bases.  Howard struck out the Fleet batter to end the inning.

In the third inning, McCarson fouled off several pitches before blasting her first home run of the season to lead off the inning.  Following a fly out, the next three Erskine batters reached base on two singles and a walk.  Again Howard pitched out of trouble, retiring the next two batters.

Erskine did not seriously threaten to score the next three innings.

Game Two

C-N's Kalyn Davis was simply perfect in the nightcap.  Davis faced the minimum twenty-one batters and retired them all.  While she only struck out, Davis induced eleven ground balls and nine fly balls.

Howard's teammates made two nice fielding plays in the seventh to preserve her perfect game.  McCarson led off the inning with a drive to right-center that C-N's Elayna Siebert reached out to snag on the run.  Afterwards Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) crushed a hard ground ball that third baseman Sara Kelley caught on her knees then popped to her feet to fire a strike to first for the final out.

Erskine pitcher Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) was the hard luck loser, yielding two runs, only one earned, over seven innings.  She limited Carson-Newman's explosive offense to nine hits, only one for extra bases.

Erskine will host in-state rival Newberry College on Monday in a doubleheader.  The first game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
