Erskine splits doubleheader with GRU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Augusta, Ga. – After having a full week of games postponed due to the winter storm, the Erskine Flying Fleet (3-3) finally got back on the field and split a double-header on the road with Georgia Regents University (4-8) this afternoon.  The Flying Fleet won the first game in 10 innings 1-0 but dropped the nightcap 3-0.

Game 1

Senior Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School) singled home the winning run in the top of the 10th and freshman pitcher Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) tossed 10 shutout innings to earn her second victory of the year.  Newton was simply fabulous, striking out seven while yielding just seven hits and two walks.  In her three collegiate starts, Newton has surrendered just four runs over 23 innings pitched.

The Jaguars best two chances to score off Newton came in the third and six innings.  In the third inning, Julia Banks led off with a double to right-center and moved to third on a single by teammate Molly Walton.  Newton escaped the inning when Erin Rozier hit a line shot directly to Brown.  In the sixth inning, Hannah Vaughn crushed a one-out double but Newton easily retired the next two batters.

Offensively, the Fleet struggled to get runners on base against GRU's Paige Deschaine, who also went ten innings.  Deschaine allowed just seven base runners, on three singles and four walks.

The Fleet got two base on balls in the second but could not muster a hit to score.  Again in the sixth, Erskine got two hits and walk but failed to drive in a run.

In the tenth inning, Brown laid down a perfect bunt and teammate Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) beat the throw home for the game winning run. NCAA uses softball international rules for extra innings, where a base runner begins the inning on second base.

Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) and Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) had the other two hits for the Flying Fleet.

Game Two

Erskine managed just one hit off GRU's Haley Brickle in the nightcap as the Fleet lost 3-0.  Hill broke up Brickle's perfect game in the sixth inning with a bunt hit.  Brickle struck out eight in the complete game shutout.

Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) pitched well for the Fleet in the loss.  White allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits over five innings.  She struck out one and did not issue a walk.  Senior Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) pitched the last inning.

Erskine's next double-header is this Saturday at home against regional powerhouse Carson-Newman College starting at 1:00 p.m.
