Dahlonega, GA – The Erskine Women's Tennis Team prevailed 5 to 4 in the season opener against the University of North Georgia this afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action.
After splitting the first two double matches, Erskine prevailed in the third set to take a 2 to 1 lead into the six singles matches. At #1 doubles,
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) and
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) quickly won their match 8 to 2 while
Haley Whatley (North Richland Hills, TX, Birdville High School) and
Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) lost at #3 doubles 8 to 1.
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and
Sarah McDonald (Cottageville, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) required an extra set to win their #2 doubles match 9 to 7 to give the Flying Fleet the 2 to 1 advantage.
The Flying Fleet split the six singles matches, winning at #2, #4 and #6. Guthrie breezed past her opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) and McDonald won 7-6 (5) and 6-4. Freshman
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) picked up the decisive point for Erskine at #6. After winning the first set 7-5, Polk dropped the second set 6 to 4. Polk rebounded to win the third set 6-3 and clinched the fifth and decisive point for the Flying Fleet.
Erskine's next match is Monday against NCAA Division I foe Gardner-Webb University at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
