Due West, S.C. – With four returning players, including three all-conference honorees, Erskine is primed to make a run at their ninth Conference Carolinas Regular Season title and their 10
th straight conference tournament title.
In the conference coaches preseason poll, the Flying Fleet have been voted to win the conference title once again. Pfeiffer was voted into the second spot while the University of Mount Olive was picked third.
Last year the Fleet (18-6, 10-0) went undefeated in Conference Carolinas play then won the tournament dropping only one point to Queens University in the finals match. With the tournament victory, the Flying Fleet also garnered their ninth consecutive NCAA regional bid where they lost to in-state foe Francis Marion 5-0.
Erskine returns three of their top four players, including their #1 singles and doubles player in senior
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School). Last season Hallman propelled the Fleet from the top spot going 17-3 in singles and 14-8 in doubles play. Hallman also went a perfect 10-0 in Conference Carolinas play, which led to her being voted Conference Carolinas' Player of the Year. She was also a 1
st team All-Conference selection for the 3
rd time in her college career. The projected #2 on this year's team is
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled). Guthrie had an impressive freshman campaign, going 12-8 overall and 10-0 in Conference Carolinas. She was also a 1
st team all-conference selection. In the #3 spot,
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) will look to pick up right where she left off in her sophomore year. Goyette's sophomore campaign resulted in a 15-4 overall record and a 9-0 record in Conference Carolinas. She also was voted 2nd Team All-Conference for the second time in her collegiate career. At the beginning of the season, the #4 spot will belong to
Sarah McDonald (Cottageville, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy). McDonald was injured at the beginning of the season, but upon her return she displayed complete dominance, going 16-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Goyette and Hallman will be playing #1 doubles this season with Guthrie and McDonald playing #2. Both combos were 14-8 in doubles play last season.
Erskine adds two talented freshmen and one transfer to the squad this year in Haley Whatley, Mollie Polk, and Haley Elliot.
Whatley (North Richland Hills, TX, Birdville High School) comes in ranked 266
th in the US for juniors, finishing her high school career with an impressive 143-30 record.
Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) finished her high school career ranked 352nd, with an 11-16 record.
Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) is a sophomore transfer from Presbyterian; she did not appear in any matches last year for the Blue Hose. Whatley, Polk, and Elliot are competing for the 5
th and 6
th spots and all will be expected to make a big contribution to the 2014 team.
Erskine opens their 2014 campaign on the road against non-conference foe North Georgia on Saturday, February 1
st. The Flying Fleet's home opener is scheduled for Monday, February 3
rd against NCAA Division I opponent Gardner-Webb University.
