Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet lost a Conference Carolinas double header Saturday afternoon to the second ranked Trojans of Mount Olive Saturday afternoon.
Game One
Erskine (21-17, 8-11) would jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would hit a one sound single and then score on a home run by
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS).
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would then step up to the plate and blast a solo home run to make it a 3-0 game. Mount Olive (35-4, 13-3) would make it a one run game in the top of the second with an RBI double by Tyler Farmer and an RBI single from Zak Orrison. In the bottom of the second,
Zack Jones (Anderson, SC, USC Sumter) would flair a two out single to right field and then
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would follow with a line shot over the right field fence to make the score 5-2. The Trojans would answer with three runs in the top of the third to tie the game at five. The score would remained tied until the top of the seventh when Brandon Reitano would draw a one out walk and then advanced to third base when a pickoff attempt got away. He would then score on a sacrifice fly by Geno Escalante to give Mount Olive the lead and the win.
Corn led the Fleet at the plate going 2-3 with a home run and two RBI’s, while Galliher was 2-4 with a home run and one run batted in.
Joe Johnson (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) (2-1) took the tough luck loss, allowing one unearned run on one hit and struck out six in four innings of work.
Game Two
Game two proved to be a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings, but in the top of the fourth Mike Mercurio would lead off with a solo home run to give Mount Olive the lead. Daniel Oliver would then double and score on a single by Bryan Dunlavey to make it a 2-0 game. It would remain 2-0 until the top of the seventh when the Trjoans would take advantage of an Erskine error and add an insurance run. In the bottom of the seventh,
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would line a solo home run over the left center field fence to make it a 3-1 game but the Fleet would not be able to continue the rally and lost 3-1.
Corn again led the Fleet at the plate going 2-3 with a double, while
Connor Gibson (Greer, SC, Riverside High School) and
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) also finished 2-3.
Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (4-6) took the loss allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and striking out eight in seven innings of work.
