Spurrier leads Erskine past NGU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tigerville, S.C. – Behind senior pitcher Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School), Erskine (9-13-2) took the first game from North Greenville 3 to 1 while the second game ended in a 5 to 5 tie due to darkness this afternoon in Conference Carolinas softball action at the NGU Softball Complex.

In a clash of aces in the first game, Spurrier outdueled the Crusader’s Rachel Glazebrook to win 3 to 1.  Spurrier went the distance surrendering just one run on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.  Glazebrook, who also went the distance, allowed 3 runs on six hits.  She struck out seven and walked two.

Erskine got to Glazebrook in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by seniorsLarissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School) and Morgan Purcell (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School).  The Fleet added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Purcell.

The Crusaders scored their lone run in the third by stringing three consecutive base hits together. 

Spurrier tried to pick up her second win of the day but the Crusaders tied the game in the sixth to force the extra frame.  Leading 4 to 3, NGU’s Kimberly Robertson crushed a double to score Sarah Armstrong.  Both teams scored a run in the 8th as the game ended 5 to 5.

Erskine banged out twelve hits in the game but could manage only one extra base hit, a double by Lindsay Waters (Simpsonville, SC, James L. Mann High School).  Junior shortstop Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School) knocked in three of the Fleet runs on two base hits while Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School), Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) and Colleen Gardner (Matthews, NC, Butler High School) also collected two hits each. 

Spurrier went six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on ten hits while fanning five.  She did not issue a walk.  Freshman Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) pitched the final two innings allowing an unearned run on one hit.

Erskine hosts Limestone this Saturday in a doubleheader.  The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.  Admission is free to all home Erskine softball games.
