Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet split their Conference Carolinas double header with Coker College Saturday afternoon to clinch the sixth seed in next week’s conference tournament.
Game One
The Cobras would get on the board in the first inning when Keith Wolf singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Loraine. Coker would take advantage of an Erskine error in the top of the eighth to add two more runs and extend their lead to three. Starter Dan Meyer (5-3) shut down the Erskine offense throwing a complete game shutout allowing just four hits and striking out seven.
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) was 2-3 to lead Erskine at the plate, while
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) and
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) each added a hit in the loss.
Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (5-7) took the loss allowing just one earned run on eight hits and striking out seven in 7.1 innings of work.
Game Two
With their backs against the wall and needing a win to lock up the final spot in the conference tournament, Erskine’s offense came out swinging in game two. Corn would be hit by a pitch to lead off the first and then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Connor Gibson (Greer, SC, Riverside High School). After a walk to
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS), Galliher would double to the right center field gap to score both runners.
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would then line a home run over the left field fence to score Galliher and make it a 4-0 game. Back to back doubles by Wooten and Hanlon Maivelett would push the Erskine lead to five. In the bottom of the fifth, Willingham would blast a solo home run to left center to make the score 6-0. Coker would cut the lead to four in the sixth but it would not be enough as the Fleet took the game 7-2.
Huff led the Fleet at the plate going 3-3 with a home run, double and two RBI’s, while Galliher added a double and two runs driven in.
Taylor Wall (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Prep HS) (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work, while
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (6) picked up the save striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
