Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – Playing their last home doubleheader, Erskine split with in-state conference rival Coker College losing the first game 2-1 but bouncing back to win the second game 5 to 3.
In game one, Coker ace Lauren Phillips outdueled Erskine’s ace
Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School) to win the game 2 to 1. Phillips limited Erskine to just two hits to earn the complete game victory. Both hits came in the third inning. With one out, Spurrier laced a solid single to right and
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) followed a batter later with another single.
The Fleet’s lone run came in the sixth as a gift from Coker.
Jordan Suther (Loganville, GA, South Gwinnett High School) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Coker misplayed a ground ball by Erskine’s
Larissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School) allowing Suther to score.
Spurrier took the tough loss surrendering two runs on six hits over seven innings of work.
Throught the first five innings of the second game, Erskine and Coker found themselves locked in another pitcher’s duel as the Fleet led 1-0.
Coker continued to go with Phillips in game two while Erskine countered with senior right-hander
Heather Richey (Abbeville, SC, Abbeville High School). Phillips held the Fleet to just one run on three hits, a solo shot by
Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) in the fourth. It was her second home run of the season. Meanwhile Richey scattered five Coker hits.
In the sixth, the two teams combined to score seven runs in the inning. Coker chased Richey from the circle scoring three runs on three hits, including two doubles.
Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) got the final out to limit the damage.
Erskine bounced right back to score four runs in their half of the sixth, driving Phillips from the game. Hicks and
Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) each delivered a two-run single.
Spurrier pitched the last inning for her first save of the season.
Between games Erskine honored their seven graduating seniors from this year’s squad.
Erskine travels to Anderson University for a doubleheader on Monday. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m.
