Erskine pounds out 21 hits to sweep LMC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Banner Elk, N.C. – Erskine pounded out 21 hits to take two games from the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 5 to 1 and 4 to 1 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas softball action at the Bobcat Softball Field.

The Flying Fleet won the first game 5 to 1 behind a 3-hit complete game effort by Erskine pitcher Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School).  It was her tenth win of the season.  The Bobcats scored their lone run, which was unearned, in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Amanda Decker.

Offensively, the Fleet banged out 9 hits to score 5 runs.  Freshman Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) led the offensive charge going 3 for 3 with two rbi doubles.  Junior Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) also had two hits, one a double while Brooke Benson (Greenville, SC, Berea High School) had a two rbi single.

The Fleet continued their offensive onslaught in the second game, banging out twelve hits, including two home runs.  Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) crushed her seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, and was 2 for 4 at the plate.  Senior Colleen Gardner’s lone hit was also a solo shot.  It was her first of the year.  Larissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School), Morgan Purcell (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) and Hicks each had two hits while shortstop Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School) was a perfect 3 for 3.

Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) picked up the win in relief, tossing 5.1 shutout innings.  She allowed just three hits while fanning six and walking one.

After playing four doubleheaders in as many days, the Fleet will take tomorrow off before hosting Coker College on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.  Erskine currently two games behind Coker for 4th place in the conference standings.
