Augusta, GA – The Flying Fleet swept a non conference double header from Augusta State University Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 11-2 and game two 7-6.
Game One
The Erskine (23-18) offense came out swinging in the first inning.
Connor Gibson (Greer, SC, Riverside High School) would hit a one out double and then
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would be hit by a pitch.
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) then singled down the right field line to score Gibson to give the Fleet the lead.
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would draw a two out walk to load the bases and then
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would blast a home run over the left field fence to make it a 5-0 game. In the top of the third, Willingham and Galliher would hit back to back singles and then score on a double by Huff to increase the lead to seven and the Fleet would not look back as they took the 11-2 victory.
Huff led the Erskine offense going 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI’s, while
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS), Willingham, and Galliher each added three hits.
Chase Norman (Blacksburg, SC, Blacksburg HS) (1-1) picked up the win allowing one run on three hits and striking out four in three innings of work.
Game Two
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Wooten would hit his second home run of the day in the second to score
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) and giver Erskine the 2-1 lead. Augusta State would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. In the top of the third, the Fleet would tie the game up Wooten was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would then double to right center to score two runs and give the Fleet the lead. After Wooten scored on a wild pitch,
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would single to right field to score Herring and make it a 7-2 game. Erskine would hold off a late rally by Augusta State to take the 7-6 win.
Wooten led the Fleet at the plate going 2-3 with a home run and two RBI’s, while Herring was 2-3 with a double and two runs driven in.
Zach McAllister (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) (4-2) picked up the win allowing one earned run on six hits in and striking out three in three innings of work.
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (4) picked up the save giving up an unearned run and striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
