Erskine Offense Explodes for 24 Runs in Double Header Sweep of North Greenville

Tigerville, SC – The Flying Fleet offense pounded out 30 hits and scored 24 runs to sweep a Conference Carolinas double header from North Greenville University Saturday afternoon.

Game One

In the top of the first, Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would hit a two out single and then steal second.  Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would follow with a single to score Willingham and then score on a double by Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS).  Erskine (15-8, 4-4) would break the game wide open in the fifth, scoring five runs to make it a 7-0 game.  Zack Jones (Anderson, SC, USC Sumter) led off with a single and Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) followed with a walk.  After Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Willingham would hit a two run single.  After a walk to Galliher, Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) connected for another two run single and then later scored on a single by Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) to finish the scoring for the Fleet.  Erskine would add three more runs and cruised to the 10-0 win. 

Willingham led the Fleet at the plate going 3-4 with three RBI’s and three runs scored, while Galliher was 2-4 with two runs batted in.  Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS), Jones, and Cothran each added two hits in the win.  Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (4-2) once again dominated on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in his third complete game shutout of the season.

Game Two

Erskine again took the lead early, when Spence launched a solo home run in the top of the second inning.  North Greenville would respond in the bottom half of the inning when Wade Wyatt hit a two run home run over the left field wall.  The Crusader lead would be short lived as the Fleet would explode for four runs in the top of the third.  Corn would lead off with a walk and Herring would follow with a single.  Willingham would then hit a double to score both runners and give Erskine the lead back.  Cothran and Gambrell would each hit run scoring singles to make it a 5-2 game.  Erskine would blow the game wide open with four more runs in the fourth.  Corn and Willingham would hit RBI doubles and Galliher would hit a two run double.  The Fleet would add seven more runs over the next five innings to take the 14-7 victory.

Willingham again led the Erskine offense going 4-6 with two doubles and four RBI’s, while Spence was 2-4 with two home runs and three RBI’s.  Wooten, Corn, Herring, and Galliher each added two hits in the win.  Joe Johnson (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) (2-0) picked up the win allowing just one hit and striking out three in 2.2 innings of relief work.
