Erskine Bats Come Alive to Take Series Against King

Bristol, TN – After scoring just three runs on four hits in a game one loss, Erskine exploded for 24 runs on 35 hits to take the final two games of their Conference Carolinas series with King University this weekend.

Game One

In the top of the first inning, Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would hit a two out single and Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would follow up with a home run down the left field line to give Erskine (20-15, 8-9) the lead.  The Tornado (19-14, 7-8) would make it a one run game in the bottom of the first.  After King tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, the Fleet would regain the lead in the fifth.  Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would lead off with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to get Wooten to third base.  Zack Jones (Anderson, SC, USC Sumter) would then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Wooten and giving Erskine the lead again.  King again tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and then scored three in the seventh to take the victory.

Galliher was 1-4 with a home run and two RBI’s to lead the Fleet, while Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS), Wooten, and Willingham each added a hit.  Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (4-5) took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

Game Two

Erskine again took the lead in the first inning.  Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) led off with a single and steal second.  He would later score on a two out single by Willingham.  Willingham would steal second and score on a single by Galliher to make it a 2-0 game.  The Fleet would add a run in the second and in the third to push their lead to four.  Erskine would take a commanding 9-2 lead into the bottom of the final inning, but the Tornado would take advantage of an Erskine error and score seven unearned runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would lead off with a single and advance to third on a double by Willingham.  Galliher would single to left center to score Maivelett and give Erskine the lead.  Erskine would add three more runs to make it a 13-9 game and hold on for the victory.

Galliher again led the Fleet at the plate going 4-4 with four RBI’s, while Willingham was 4-5 with a double and two RBI’s.  Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (6-1) picked up the win allowing one unearned run while striking out four in 1.1 innings of work.

Game Three

In the top of the second Spence would lead off with a single and then score on a double by Wooten.  Wooten would then score on a single by Herring to make it a 2-0 game. In the top the fourth, Spence would lead off with a home run.  Wooten would then hit a single and steal second and score on a double by Herring.  Herring would later score when Corn was caught stealing to make it a 5-0 game.  Erskine would then add six more runs to take an 11-0 victory.

Wooten led the Fleet at the plate going 4-5 with two doubles and one RBI, while Spence was 4-5 with a home run and two RBI’s and Corn was 3-5 with a double, triple and two runs driven in.  Alex Rhodes (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) (1-2) picked up his first college win allowing just three hits in six innings and striking out two.  Joe Johnson (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) (1) picked up his first college save pitching three perfect innings in relief and striking out two.
