Shannon's game-winner homer puts her 1st all-time

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – SeniorLarissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School) became Erskine’s career home run leader with a two-run game-winning blast as Erskine swept Augusta State 7-4 and 8-6 today in non-conference softball action at the Erskine Softball Complex.

With game two at tied 6-6, Shannon hit a line-drive home run over the right field fence to put the Fleet up 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) got the final three outs for her first win of the season.  For Shannon, it was the 44th home run of her career, moving her past Courtney Davis, on the career list.

Augusta State (11-19) committed four errors in the game that resulted in six unearned runs for the Fleet.

Erskine (8-11-1) was led at the plate by senior Colleen Gardner (Matthews, NC, Butler High School), who went 3 for 3, including two doubles, and drove in four of the Fleet’s eight runs. Jordan Suther (Loganville, GA, South Gwinnett High School) and Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) also had two hits in the game.

In the first game, Erskine scored five runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 7 to 4 victory.  McCarson provided the big blow with a two-run home run in the second inning.  It was her second home run of the year.  Erskine added two more runs in the 5th inning on three consecutive doubles by Morgan Purcell (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School), Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) and Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School).

In the circle, senior Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School) tossed a complete game for her sixth win of the season.  Her only mistake coming in the seventh when she surrendered a two-run home run to Macy Terry to make the final score 7 to 4.

Erskine hosts in-state conference foe Coker College in a double-header this Saturday.  The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
