Wingate, N.C. – Playing on the road, Erskine edged #5 regionally ranked Wingate University 5-4 in non-conference women’s tennis action.
Following the doubles competition, Erskine found themselves trailing in the match 2-1.
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) and
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortagne) continued their outstanding doubles play winning at #1 doubles 8-4. The Fleet dropped the other two doubles matches by the same score of 8-5.
Erskine prevailed in four of the six singles matches to win the match 5-4. Hallman cruised in her match at #1 singles winning in straight sets while senior
Abby O'Reilly (Acworth, GA, Harrison High School) tied the match at 3-3 slipping past her opponent in straight sets at 6-3, 6-4.
After winning her opening set, Goyette overcame a terrible second set in which she lost 6-1 to win the third set 6-4 for the Fleet’s fourth point.
With two matches still in play, freshman
Sarah McDonald (Cottageville, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) won the decisive fifth point, winning her set in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to give the Fleet the victory over the Bulldogs.
Erskine has now won three matches in a row after beginning their season 0-2. Wingate is the second regionally ranked opponent the Fleet have beat this season.
Erskine goes on the road this weekend to play conference foes Barton College and Mount Olive College.
