Erskine loses to USC-Aiken 4-3; ties 4-4 in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – In a double-header against USC-Aiken, Erskine lost the first game 4 to 3 and tied in the nightcap 4 to 4 due to darkness in non-conference woman's softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex.

Poor defensive play haunted the Fleet in game one.  Leading 3 to 2, Erskine allowed two unearned runs on two errors in the seventh inning to lose 4 to 3.  After a lead-off single by Pacers’ Brittany Williamson, who advanced to second on a pass ball, Erskine failed to get the out at first on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowing Williamson to score.  The next hitter drilled a line drive directly at right fielder Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) who attempted to throw out the batter at first but the throw was mishandled by the first baseman allowing another unearned run to cross the plate.  Erskine pitcher Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School) retired the next three batters to limit the damage but the Fleet were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pacers the 4 to 3 victory.

Spurrier pitched her fourth complete game of the season allowing 4 runs, 2 earned, on 9 hits.  She walked three and struck out two.

Erskine scored all three their runs in the third inning.  Lindsay Waters (Simpsonville, SC, James L. Mann High School) led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a pass ball.  SeniorLarissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School) hit a two-run home run, her second of the season, to account for all the Fleet hits and runs.

Pacer pitcher India Kornegay earned her second win of the season allowing the three earned runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking three.

In the nightcap, Erskine jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Pacers scored three runs in the 5th to force an extra frame before the game was called due to darkness.  In the first inning, Shannon blasted her second home run of the day, another two-run shot, to put the Fleet up 2-0.  The Fleet added another run in the third inning on a solo shot by Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School), her first of the year.

After pitching four scoreless frames, the Pacers finally got to Erskine pitcher Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) in the fifth, who departed with the bases loaded and one out.  Unfortunately, the Pacers got back-to-back singles to plate three runs to tie the game.

Playing international rules (a base runner starts the inning at second base), both teams tallied a run each in the 8th inning.  At that point, the umpires called the game due to darkness resulting in the 4-4 tie.

Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) tallied three of the Fleet’s eight hits in the game while Thornton, Waters and Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School)each had a base hit.

Erskine is now 2-5-1 on the season while USC-Aiken stands at 4-3-1.

Erskine opens conference play this Saturday against Belmont Abbey College.  The first game starts at 1 p.m
