Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet pounded out 13 hits, including eight doubles, in an 11-4 victory over Brevard College Tuesday in non conference baseball action.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) led off with a single and then advanced to third on a double by
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS). Dix would then score on a sacrifice fly by
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) to give Erskine (9-2) a 1-0 lead. The Fleet would extend their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would lead off with a double and then score on a single by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS). With two runners on and two outs, Spence would hit his second double in as many innings to score both runners.
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would follow with a single to score Spence to round out the scoring in the third.
The Fleet would add two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to push their lead to 8-0. It looked as though Erskine would cruise, but Bennett Hixson would lead off the sixth with a walk and then later scored on a ground out by Chris Christopoulos to put the Tornado’s (4-5) on the board. In the seventh, Matthew Proffitt would reach base on an Erskine error and then Chad Fisher would follow with a single to put two runners on base. Hixson would then step to the plate and blast a three run home run to make it a four run game. The Fleet would answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it an 11-4 game.
Corn was 2-4 with two doubles, while Galliher and Spence added two hits and two RBI’s each to lead the Fleet. Wooten and
Zack Jones (Anderson, SC, USC Sumter) both had two hits and a run driven in on the day.
Dustin Sherbert (Mayo, SC, Chesnee HS) (2-0) picked up the win allowing one run on two hits and striking out three in five innings of work.
