Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University defeated Erskine 5-2 in non-conference women’s tennis action at the Webb Tennis Complex.
Playing under the host’s NCAA Division I rules, GWU clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 and 8-4 victories at #1 and #2 doubles. Erskine won the #3 doubles match as GWU only had four healthy players for the match.
In the singles competition, GWU won the four singles sets to seal the 5-2 victory. Senior
Abby O'Reilly (Acworth, GA, Harrison High School) forced a third set by winning her second set 6-3 but lost in the decisive set 6-4. Both
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortagne) and
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) lost close matches in straight sets. Goyette dropped a very tight first set 7-6 (4-0) and lost the second set 6-3. Hallman also pushed her competition but lost 6-3, 7-5. GWU conceited the last two single matches.
Erskine now stands at 0-2 on the season while Gardner-Webb picks up their first win to move to 1-2 overall.
Erskine travels down the road to play Belmont Abbey College Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
