GWU breezes past Erskine 5-2

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University defeated Erskine 5-2 in non-conference women’s tennis action at the Webb Tennis Complex.

Playing under the host’s NCAA Division I rules, GWU clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 and 8-4 victories at #1 and #2 doubles.  Erskine won the #3 doubles match as GWU only had four healthy players for the match.

In the singles competition, GWU won the four singles sets to seal the 5-2 victory.  Senior Abby O'Reilly (Acworth, GA, Harrison High School) forced a third set by winning her second set 6-3 but lost in the decisive set 6-4.   Both Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortagne) and Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) lost close matches in straight sets.  Goyette dropped a very tight first set 7-6 (4-0) and lost the second set 6-3.  Hallman also pushed her competition but lost 6-3, 7-5.  GWU conceited the last two single matches.

Erskine now stands at 0-2 on the season while Gardner-Webb picks up their first win to move to 1-2 overall.

Erskine travels down the road to play Belmont Abbey College Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
