Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet rebounded from a loss of Thursday to sweep a double header from Salem International Friday afternoon in non conference baseball action.
Game One
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two run single by Jayson Barnes. In the bottom half of the inning,
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) reached base on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a single by
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS). In the bottom of the fourth
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would hit a one out triple and then scored on a ground out by Spence to tie the game at two. The following inning, Herring led off with a double and would later score on a double by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to give Erskine the lead for good.
Willingham and Herring both had two hits to lead the Erskine offense, while Galliher and
Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) each added a hit.
Taylor Wall (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Prep HS) (2-0) picked up the win allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six in 5.2 inning of work.
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (2) picked up the save pitching a scoreless inning and striking out all three batters he faced.
Game Two
In the bottom of the first, Galliher would hit a double and the score on a single by Gambrell to put the Fleet up 1-0. Their lead would be short lived as Salem would tie the game up on a double by Emmanuel Dominguez that scored Scott Schlapinski. Erskine would regain the lead in the third when
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) reached on a bunt single and then scored on Gambrell’s second RBI single. The Fleet added three insurance runs in the fifth inning and held on for the win.
Gambrell was a perfect 3-3 with three RBI’s to pace the Erskine offense, while Corn added two hits and scored two runs.
Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (3-0) pitched his third straight complete game, allowing one run on four hits and striking out nine in seven innings of work.
The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game starting at 12:00.
