Due West, SC – Newberry College defeated Erskine 8-2 Thursday afternoon in non conference baseball action at Grier Field.

The Wolves took advantage of two Fleet errors in the top of the first inning to score two runs.  They would add two more in the second and one in the third to push their lead to five.  Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would lead off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to make it a 5-1 game.  The score remained 5-1 until the top of the seventh when Newberry scored a run on a RBI single by Albert Baur.  The Fleet would answer in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI triple by Connor Gibson (Greer, SC, Riverside High School) that scored Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS).  The Wolves would add two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to take the victory.
 
Ryan Cranmer led Newberry at the plate going 4-5 with a triple and two RBI’s, while Eric Barbieri was 2-5 with a home run and three runs driven in.  Brandon Ahrens (1-0) picked up the win allowing one run on two hits and striking out six in five innings of work.

Spence and Gibson each had one hit and one RBI to lead the Erskine offense.  Alex Rhodes (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) (0-1) took the loss allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out three in 2.1 innings of work.
