Fleet Defeat Wingate With Walk Off Single to Open the Season

Box Score

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet started the 2013 season off in exciting fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Wingate University 2-1 Friday afternoon.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bulldogs would take the lead in the top of the third.  Michael Godinez would reach on an Erskine error to lead off the inning.  After reaching second on a sacrifice bunt from Will Sapp, Godinez would score on a single by Eric Serra.  Both teams would have chances to score, but the score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would lead off with a single to left field and then Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would walk to put the winning run on base.  Teddy Heiser (Chicago, IL, College of Lake County) would pinch hit to get the sacrifice bunt down but he would walk after a passed ball to load the bases.  Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) would then get hit by a pitch to bring the tying run in and Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would follow with a line drive up the middle to score Corn and win the game.

Blake Prince led Wingate at the plate going 3-4 with a double, while Brian Yeung added two hits.  Joshua Karr (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on one hit without recording an out in the ninth. Gambrell and Spence each had a hit and RBI to lead the Fleet offense.  Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (1-0) picked up the win striking out two in one and a third innings of relief work.
