Due West, S.C. – Senior basketball player Porsha Morgan was named the Jake Todd Award recipient, Erskine’s highest athletic award, at the annual Athletic Banquet hosted by Aramark and the Flying Fleet Club.
Morgan graduates this May with a degree in sports management who departs Erskine as the best point guard in women’s basketball program history. The four-time all-conference selectee ranks second all-time in both scoring (1,894 points) and assists (564 assists). The Columbus, GA native made school history in just her sixth collegiate game scoring 38 points against Barton College to set a new single-game scoring record. This season Morgan finished second in the conference in both scoring and assists, averaging 19.7 ppg and 131 assists, and was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. In addition, Morgan was also named for the second consecutive year to the Academic All-Conference Team.
Senior tennis player Nikki Miller and senior volleyball player Sandra Campbell received the Karen Bell Memorial Award for outstanding Christian commitment while Cade Weatherly of the men’s soccer team earned the Sonny Rhem Award in recognition for his community service and service to others.
Conference Carolinas Commissioner Alan Patterson was also on hand to award senior men’s tennis player Vincent Chauvette the Murphy Osborne Award, the conference’s highest academic award. Vincent graduates on Saturday with a perfect 4.0 grade point average with a degree in Biology.
The night also included the awarding of the Beville Cup. Anderson Aramark Director Greg Quarles along with the Beville family presented the award to Erskine Aramark general manager Randy Moore, who requested freshman Ronnie Funk join him in accepting the award on Erskine’s behalf. Funk sunk a 40 foot putt on the last hole to give the Flying Fleet the win in the Beville Cup competition.
Director of Athletics Mark Peeler closed out the banquet. At the beginning of the year, Peeler encouraged and promoted “remarkable” as the theme for the year. It was a “remarkable year” in that the Flying Fleet had their highest finish in the conference’s Joby Hawn Award, placing fifth in the conference’s all-sports competition. In addition, Erskine won the Murphy Osborne for the second consecutive year and the fifth time in the last nine years, three player of the year awards, four freshman of the year awards, a coach of the year honor, and a team sportmanship award as well as having a record number of student-athletes (37) named to the Academic All-Conference team.
