Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet offense exploded for 15 runs in the final three innings to defeat Saint Andrews 19-4 Saturday afternoon and complete a sweep of the Conference Carolinas series.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth,
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) led off the inning with a single and
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position.
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would then reach on an error that allowed both runners to score and tie the game. After
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) reached on another Knight error,
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would double down the right field line to score Wooten and give Erskine (24-15, 12-9) the lead. With the bases loaded,
Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) would lift a sacrifice fly to center field and score Herring to make it a 4-2 game. Saint Andrews (9-30, 3-18) would respond with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth,
Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) would single to right field. After back to back walks to Purvis and
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) to load the bases,
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would blast a 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam and put Erskine up 8-4. The Fleet would add three runs in the seventh and eight runs in the eighth to put the game away.
McCarthy was 4-5 with a RBI and two runs scored for Erskine, while Huff was 3-6 with three runs driven in. Galliher, Herring and Spence each had two hits for the Fleet in the win.
Tyler Jones (Plum Branch, SC, McCormick HS) (1-0) picked up the win allowing just one hit and striking out one in two and two-thirds innings of relief.
