Wilson, NC - Facing elimination for the second straight day, the Flying Fleet defeated King College 7-3 and then followed that game up with a 3-1 victory over North Greenville Saturday. With the two wins, Erskine adavnces to Sunday's championship game(s) to face top seeded Mount Olive College.
Game One (Erskine 7 King 3)

Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) drove in three run to lead No. 6 Erskine College to a 7-3 victory over No. 4 King College in an elimination game of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament hosted by Barton College and the Wilson Tobs at historic Fleming Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Erskine jumped out in front with three runs in both the first and third innings to take a 6-0 cushion. The first featured back-to-back RBI doubles off the bats of junior
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) and sophomore
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS). The third was highlighted by a two-run single in the left field gap by Galliher, who also knocked in a run in the first with another single.
Junior starter
Taylor Wall (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Prep HS) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Fleet when senior Shane Timberlake spoiled the bid with a leadoff single that fell short of the centerfielder. King got its first two runs in that frame as sophomore Tyler Gaby followed with a double; Gaby scored on a groundout by sophomore Cody Snyder; and Gaby trotted home on a junior Josh Huffman single through the middle of the infield.
Timberlake drove in the final Tornado run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Erskine tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Sophomore
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) singled to right; stole second and then came around to score on a single by freshman Brandon Wooten.
Wall (5-4) picked up the win allowing three runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The righty had four strikeouts in the winning effort. Junior
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) logged his sixth save of the season tossing the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
Erskine doubled up King with a 12-6 hit advantage. Galliher was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Willingham, Corn and Huff all added two hits apiece.
Junior starter Wesley Houser (7-6) suffered the loss for the Tornado, allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits over six innings. House matched Wall with four K’s.
Game Two (Erskine 3 North Grreenville 1)

Dustin Sherbert (Mayo, SC, Chesnee HS) picked up his first collegiate win to lead No. 6 seed Erskine College into the 2012 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament championship game hosted by Barton College and the Wilson Tobs with a 3-1 victory over No. 5 seed North Greenville University on Saturday night in historic Fleming Stadium.
Erskine (30-22) won a third elimination in two days to earn its spot in the championship game(s) against top seeded Mount Olive College on Sunday in a rematch of Thursday’s first round contest for both programs. The first championship game is slated for 1 p.m. If the Flying Fleet wins the game, a second championship game will be played Sunday as the Trojans enter the final day undefeated in the tourney.
North Greenville (28-25) won two straight in its first ever Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament before being eliminated with two losses on Saturday.
The two clubs traded the first two runs of the game. Erskine struck first in the bottom of the first as senior
Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) singled and later scored on a double by sophomore Corn. Senior David Frazier scored the equalizer in the top of the second by drawing a leadoff walk and eventually touching home plate on a groundout by senior Anthony Foulk.
The Fleet regained a one-run advantage in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Corn singled and then moved over to second on a walk drawn by Huff before scoring on a single up the middle by Galliher.
Erskine doubled up its advantage with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Huff started the frame with a double just inside the right field line and was moved over to third on a sac bunt by Galliher before scurrying home on a wild pitch.
The Fleet outhit NGU 8-3 with Corn and Huff each producing a pair of base knocks.
Sherbert (1-0) went 6 2/3 innings and only allowed one run on three hits and three walks. The righty fanned six Crusaders. A trio of Erskine relievers finished out the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. Junior
Evan Howard (Thomson, GA, Paine College) toed the rubber for the final two innings for his second save. Howard struck out three including the final two batters of the game.
Senior Dylan Fulk (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on six hits and four walks over 6 1/3 innings. Fulk tallied a trio of strikeouts.
