Due West, SC – Erskine split a Conference Carolinas double header with visiting Limestone College Saturday afternoon. With the win in game one and a loss by Coker College the Fleet secured a spot in the conference tournament starting Thursday in Wilson, NC.
Game One (Erskine 8 Limestone 2)
The Saints (16-31, 7-19) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on back to back RBI singles by Chad Balderman and Cooper Gunter. In the bottom of the second,
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would lead off with a triple and then score on a single by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to cut the lead to one. In the bottom of the third,
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would lead off with a single and later score when
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) reached on a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, Wooten would draw a walk to score
Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstron Atlantic University) who singled earlier in the inning to give Erskine the lead. Erskine (26-21, 14-13) would explode for five runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) finished the game 2-3 with two RBI’s to lead the Fleet, while Huff was 1-4 with a home run and three runs driven in. Making the first start of his college career,
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (4-2) picked up the win allowing two runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Game Two (Limestone 4 Erskine 3)
The Fleet would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two run single from Purvis. In the top of the fifth, Gunter would lead off with a double and then later score on a ground out by Julian Bridges to cut the lead to one run. The Saints would tie the game up in the seventh when Gunter led off with another double and then later scores in a sacrifice fly by Stephen Crow. Erskine would regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning when
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) hit a two out single and then scored on a single by Purvis. Limestone would answer right back with RBI singles by Josh Lyon and Gunter in the top of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead and then hold on for the victory.
Purvis led the Fleet at the plate going 4-5 with three RBI’s, while Galliher was 2-3.
Evan Howard (Thomson, GA) (2-1) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits in one inning of work.
