Charlotte, N.C. – Senior
Nikki Miller (Simpsonville, SC, Southside Christian School) won the crucial fifth point, winning her singles match in straight sets, as Erskine downed Queens University 5-4 to win the Conference Carolinas regular season conference title. For Erskine, it is their seventh regular season title in the last eight years.
It appeared Erskine would run away with the match convincingly winning all three doubles matches.
With a 3-0 lead, the Fleet needed to just win two of the six singles matches. Playing the six singles matches in two groups, the Royals rebounded from their disappointing doubles play to win the first three singles matches. Erskine lost at #2 and #3 singles in straight sets and Elena Mileva edged
Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) at #1 singles 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, and 6-3 to tie the match at 3-3.
In the next three singles matches, Erin Williams quickly dispatched
Victoria Stephens (Cumming, GA, South Forsyth High School) at #5 singles to give Queens the 4-3 advantage. Erskine’s
Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortagne) rallied from dropping her first set to win her match while Miller swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to seal the victory for the Flying Fleet.
Erskine enters the conference championship tournament as the #1 seed. The tournament will be held at the Palmetto Tennis Center starting this Thursday. Erskine will serve as the host institution.
