Erskine Loses Two Out Of Three to Coker

Hartsville, SC – After losing the first two games of a Conference Carolinas series to Coker College, the Flying Fleet rebounded to win the final game of the series 12-8 this past weekend.

Game One (Coker 20 Erskine 3)

Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) was 2-4 with an RBI, while Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) was 1-3 with a home run and two RBI’s to lead the Fleet at the plate.  Robbie Brown (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning of work.
 
Game Two (Coker 5 Erskine 1)

Coker continued their offensive explosion in game two, scoring five runs in the first five innings and held on for the victory.  Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) had two hits to lead the Fleet, while Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman HS) came off the bench and had a single to drive in the only Erskine run.  Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) (5-2) took the loss allowing five runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
 
Game Three (Erskine 12 Coker 8)

The Flying Fleet would jump out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the final game.  Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) and Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) would lead off the inning with back to back singles.   Drew Willingham and Chase Corn would then draw back to back walks to put Erskine up 1-0.  Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would then reach on an error by the right fielder to score Purvis.  Willingham would then score on an error by the catcher to increase the lead to three.  Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would then single to score Corn and advance Huff to third.  Erskine would then execute a double steal to push the lead to five.  Coker would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 5-2 game.  McCarthy would lead off the second with a triple to right field and then score on a sacrifice fly by Willingham to make the score 6-2.  After Coker put up three runs in the bottom half of the inning, Erskine would respond with a run in the top of the third to make it a 7-5 game.

Leading 9-8, the Fleet would score three runs in the top of the eighth inning to provide some breathing room and would hold on for the victory.  McCarthy was 5-6 with a double, triple and three runs scored to lead the Fleet. Herring finished the game 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in and Huff, Purvis, andLogan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) added two hits each in the win.  Kit Carter (3-2) picked up the win allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five in four and a third innings of relief work.
