Purvis Hits Walk Off Home Run to Lift Erskine to 8-7 Victory Over Newberry

Box Score Due West, SC – Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) blasted his second home run of the game to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning to give Erskine an 8-7 walk off victory over Newberry Wednesday afternoon.

The Wolves would take the lead in the top of the first when Kevin Rufus hit the first pitch of the game over the right field fence.  The Flying Fleet would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth when Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then later scored on a single by Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS).  Newberry (10-23) would answer with two runs in the top of the fifth.  Wesley Camp would walk and score on a double by Andy Vogal to break the tie.  Vogal would then score on a single by Albert Baur to make it a 3-1 game.  The Wolves would increase their lead to 5-1 with back to back RBI singles by Camp and Vogal in the sixth inning.

Erskine (20-12) would cut the lead to two in the bottom of the sixth on back to back RBI ground outs by Corn and Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS).  In the bottom of the eighth inning, Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would be hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, after back to back strike out, Purvis would hit a two out two run home run to tie the game up at five.  Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would then follow the blast with a single and Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would then double to put runners at second and third with two outs.  Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) would then double down the left field line to give the Fleet a 7-5 lead.  In the top of the ninth, Vogel would lead off with a single and then Baur would blast a two run home run to tie the game at seven.  The game would remain tied until the bottom of the 10th when Purvis belted his second home run of the game to give Erskine the victory.

Purvis led the Erskine offense going 2-5 with two home runs and three runs batted in, while Wooten was the only other Erskine hitter with two hits.  Robbie Brown (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) (5-2) picked up the win pitching a scoreless 10th inning.

The Fleet return to action Friday as they travel to Conference Carolinas rival Mount Olive with a single game starting at 6:00.
