Box Score Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet rode another outstanding pitching performance and held off a late Tornado rally to win 4-2 and sweep the Conference Carolinas series from King.
The game would be a pitcher’s duel from the first pitch and neither team could generate any offence for the first three innings, but in the bottom of the fourth
Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) would lead off with a solo home run to put the Fleet (19-12, 9-6) up.
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would follow McCarthy’s blast with a double and then later scored on a ground out by
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) to give the Fleet a 2-0 lead. Erskine would extend their lead in the sixth.
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would single to lead off the inning and advance to third on a single by Willingham. Corn would then single to center to score Spence. After Willingham and Corn pulled off a double steal,
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a 4-0 game. King (18-12, 8-7) would score a run in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to three. In the top of the ninth, the Tornado would get three straight singles to start the inning and make it a 4-2 game.
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) would then come into the game with runners at first and second with no one out. He would get the first batter he faced to ground out, and then strike the next two hitters out to shut the game down and record his third save of the year.
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) was 2-3 for Erskine, while Willingham also had two hits and Corn drove in two runs. Junior
Taylor Wall (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Prep HS) (3-3) picked up his second straight win allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out seven in eight innings of work.
