Herring Hits Walk Off Home Run to Give Erskine 9-8 Victory Over Anderson

Box Score Due West, SC – Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS)’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the tenth gave the Flying Fleet a 9-8 victory over local rival Anderson University Wednesday afternoon in non conference baseball action.

Erskine (16-12) would get on the board early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.  With the bases loaded, Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) would hit a two run single to put the Fleet up.  Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would follow with a three run home run to extend the lead.  The Trojans (9-23) would cut the lead to three in the top of the second on an RBI double by Shawn Delmontagne and an RBI ground out by Thomas Padro.  In the bottom of the fifth, Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) would hit a solo home run down the left field line to make it a 6-2 game.

Anderson would score three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Erskine lead to one.  The Fleet would add single runs in the seventh and eighth to make it an 8-5 game heading into the ninth.  Anderson would make it a one run game on back to back RBI singles from Paul Como and Erick Sanderson.  The Trojans would then tie the game on a sacrifice fly from Brett Scarberry.  The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 10th when Herring led off the inning with his first home run of the season to give the Fleet the 9-8 walk off victory.

Wooten was 2-4 with a home run and three RBI’s to lead the Erskine offense, while Herring was 2-5 with the game winning home run.  Robbie Brown (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) (4-2) picked up the win pitching a scoreless tenth inning and striking out three.

Blake May led the Trojans at the plate going 4-5 with two runs scored, while Delmontagne and Jonathan Romano each added two hits in the loss.  Jacob Saxon (0-2) took the loss allowing one run on one hit in one inning pitched.
