Box Score 2 Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet split a Conference Carolinas baseball double header Friday afternoon, winning game one 5-2 and then falling 8-2 in the second game.
In the bottom of the first,
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would lead off with a single and
Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) would follow with a walk. After
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) sacrificed them into scoring position, Galliher would score on a wild pitch and Yost would score on a ground out by
Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) to put Erskine (8-7, 2-3 Conference Carolinas) up 2-0. The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the seventh, when John Reinholz would lead off with a double for North Greenville (11-6, 4-1). He would later score when Marcus Duckworth reached base on a fielder’s choice to make it a 2-1 game. The Fleet would answer the Crusaders in the bottom half of the inning, when Willingham led off with an opposite field home run. Purvis would follow with a single and then later scored on a single by
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) to put Erskine up 4-1.
Robbie Brown (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) (2-1) picked up the win pitching six shutout innings and allowing just three hits and striking out five.
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (2) picked up the save allowing one run on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief work.
In game two, the Fleet would once again strike first when Galliher led off the bottom of the first with a single and then later scored on a double by
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) to put Erskine up 1-0. North Greenville would tie the game up in the fourth when Andrew Lawrence drew a two out walk and then scored on a single by Frank Polino. Erskine would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Yost would lead off with a single and then later scored when the Crusaders tried to throw a runner out at second base. The Fleet were three outs from a double header sweep, but North Greenville exploded for seven runs in the last inning to take the victory.
Carter (1-2) took the loss allowing four runs in one third of an inning of work.
