Flying Fleet Escape Clarion to Complete Series Sweep

Box Score Due West, SC- Erskine scored 13 runs in the final two innings and held on for a 17-12 victory to complete a three game sweep of visiting Clarion University Thursday afternoon.

The Fleet (13-10) got on the board in the bottom of the first when Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) blasted a two run home run over the left field wall.  In the bottom of the third, Josh Purvis (Valdosta, GA, Armstrong Atlantic University) would hit a two run home run to right center to extend the lead to 4-0.  The Golden Eagles (1-7) would score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Erskine lead to two runs.  In the sixth inning, Clarion would score two runs to tie the game and then took the lead with a run in the seventh.

Erskine would explode for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead.  The big blow of the inning was a three run home run by pinch hitter Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman HS).  Erskine would add seven more in the eighth and held off a Clarion rally in the ninth to secure the victory.

Sophomore Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinette HS) had a career high six hits, going a perfect 6-6 with two doubles and three RBI’s to lead the Fleet.  Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) added three hits, while Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) had two hits for Erskine.  Joby Moss (Richburg, SC, Lewisville HS) (1-0) picked up his first college victory allowing one run on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief work.

The Fleet travel to Barton tomorrow to open up a Conference Carolinas series with a single game starting at 2:00 pm.
