Box Score Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet scored three runs in the final two innings to take a 6-5 victory over Clarion University Wednesday afternoon in non conference baseball action.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Erskine (12-10) would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) reached on an error then later scored on a ground out by
Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS). In the top of the fifth inning, Clarion would score two more runs to make it a 4-1 game. In the bottom half of the inning Hanlon Maivelett would reach first on an infield single and then scored on a double to left center field by Corn. Corn would then score on a single by
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) to cut the lead to one.
Two innings later Corn would hit a solo home run to right field to tie the game up. Willingham would then draw a two out walk and then score on a single by
Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) to give the Fleet the lead. Their lead would be short lived as the Golden Eagles scored a run in the top of the eighth to tie the game.
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would lead off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and then advance to second on a ground out by
Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS). With two outs,
Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would double down the left field line to score Wooten and give Erskine the lead.
Heath Gray (Greer, SC, Byrnes HS) came in and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the year.
Corn led the Erskine offense going 2-5 with three RBI’s, while McCarthy and Will Huff each added two hits.
Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (2-2) picked up the win allowing one unearned run on one hit in one and a third innings of relief work.
The two teams conclude their series tomorrow with a single game at 2:30.
