Fleet Cruise to 13-4 Victory Over Clarion

Box Score Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet pounded out 23 hits, including 11 for extra bases in a 13-4 victory over Clarion University Tuesday afternoon to open up the three game non conference baseball series.

Erskine broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third.  Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) and Zac McCarthy (Lyman, SC, Byrnes HS) each blasted two run home runs to make it 4-0.  Phillip Herring (Dillon, SC, Dillion HS) and Cameron Yost (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) would hit back to back doubles to extend the lead to five.  Clarion (1-5) would get on the board in the top of the fourth when Matt Rossi would lead off with a single and later score on a balk. Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to push the Erskine (11-10) lead back to five. In the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would hit a two out double and then scored on a double by McCarthy.  Herring would follow with a single to center field to score McCarthy and make it an 8-1 game. 

After the Golden Bears scored two runs in the top of the seventh, Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would come off the bench and blast a three run home run to right center to make the score 11-3.  In the bottom of the eighth, Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS) would hit a one out double and then score on a triple by Corn.  Corn would then score on a single by Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to round out the scoring for the Fleet.

Herring led the Erskine offense going 4-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Willingham was 3-4 with a home run and two runs batted in.  Kevin Cantrell (Greer, SC, Riverside HS) (1-2) picked up the win allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work.

The two teams will continue their series tomorrow with a single game at 2:30 pm.  The game will be carried on the Flying Fleet Network.
