Erskine upsets #6 Wingate 6-3

Due West, SC – The Erskine Flying Fleet earned an important regional win over #6 regionally ranked Wingate University in non-conference women’s tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.  With the victory, Erskine climbs to 5-2 on the year while Wingate receives their first blemish at 5-1.

The doubles competition was very competitive with the Flying Fleet prevailing in two of the three matches.  Abby O'Reilly (Acworth, GA, Harrison High School) and Nikki Miller (Simpsonville, SC, Southside Christian School) secured the first point for the Fleet with an 8-4 victory at #3 doubles.  Tessa Rheault (Levis, Quebec, Canada, Ecole Pointe Levy) and Mika Goyette (Brossard, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortagne) won a tight match 8-6 at #1 doubles while Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) and Victoria Stephens (Cumming, GA, South Forsyth High School)lost the tie-breaker 7-4 to drop their hard-fought match 9-8.

While all the singles matches were decided in straight sets, each match was extremely competitive.  Hallman bounced back from her loss in doubles to win 6-2, 6-4 at #1 singles.   At #4 singles, Goyette won a tough first set 7-5 and cruised through an easy second set 6-1 to earn the Fleet’s fourth point.  Rheault won the match for the Fleet at #2 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.  O’Reilly also won her match 6-3, 7-5 at #3 singles.  Both Stephens and April Horne (Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) were edged in their first sets 7-5 then lost their second sets 6-3 and 6-4 respectively. 

Erskine hosts USC-Aiken on Wednesday starting at 2:30 p.m.
